Skin changes with age in ways that are ordinary and well understood. Knowing which of those changes a cream can help with, and which it cannot, makes choosing one much easier.
What actually changes
From roughly the mid-forties onward, skin produces less oil and holds less water. The outer layer becomes thinner and drier, and it takes longer to recover from cold weather, hot showers, or a short night. Fine lines that used to appear only when you smiled begin to stay put.
Collagen and elastin production slows as well, which is why skin feels less springy under a fingertip than it once did. None of this is damage. It is what skin does.
What a moisturiser can and cannot do
Dryness is the part that responds most readily. A rich cream adds oils and humectants that hold water in the outer layer, so skin feels supple rather than tight, and fine lines look softer when the skin around them is well hydrated.
Dryness is the change that answers fastest to what you put on your skin.
What a cream cannot do is replace what the skin has stopped making. It does not rebuild the skin's own collagen, and we will not say that it does. Hydrolysed collagen in a formula works at the surface, as a conditioning agent that helps skin feel smooth and supple.
